Sammlung Moderne Kunst (Modern Art Collection)

The Sammlung Moderne Kunst in the Pinakothek der Moderne picks up precisely where the collection of the Neue Pinakothek ends, namely with the art that came after around 1900. With its extensive stock totaling more than 20,000 works, it is one of the world’s leading institutions for painting, sculpture, photography and new media. Its collection ranges from the most important avant-garde movements of the early 20th century to current contemporary art.

Since the 20th anniversary of the Pinakothek der Moderne in September 2022, the Sammlung Moderne Kunst is presenting itself in 25 rooms on 3,600 square metres with around 350 works by more than 150 artists in a completely new way: Based on key works from the fields of painting, sculpture, graphic art, photography and video art, completely new thematic focuses are set, and exciting dialogues developed under the title MIX & MATCH .

The outstanding artworks of classical modernism by, for example, Max Beckmann, August Macke, Paul Klee and Pablo Picasso enter into direct dialogue with photography from the unique holdings of the Ann and Jürgen Wilde Foundation (Bernd and Hilla Becher, Albert Renger-Patzsch, Karl Blossfeldt, Florence Henri, Germaine Krull, Lazlo Moholy-Nagy).

Unique works by contemporary artists from the fields of painting, photography, and video art, such as David Claerbout, Dan Flavin, Katharina Grosse, Andreas Gursky, Jonathan Meese and Jeff Wall, among others, confront current social, political, philosophical and societal discourses in this colourful new conception and surprise the audience anew in every room.

In this unconventional juxtaposition, works of art from 120 years open up lively perspectives on central questions of our present. Visitors are invited to (re)discover highlights of the collection as well as previously unknown masterpieces and new acquisitions of recent years.
