Since 2019, the Bayerische Staatsgemäldesammlungen have been cooperating with the Written Art Collection, which thus significantly expands the collection and research focus of the Sammlung Moderne Kunst in the Pinakothek der Moderne.

The Written Art Collection is a German private collection comprising around 300 works. It is dedicated to the exploration of informal, gestural, calligraphic and script-based forms of expression in the visual arts media of the 20th and 21st centuries. The works originate from Western and East Asian regions as well as the Middle East.

With this cooperation, the Bayerische Staatsgemäldesammlungen and the Written Art Collection are pursuing the goal of making the topic of "writing and image" accessible to a broad public and promoting intercultural exchange.

In addition, the diversity within a Western-influenced institution is to be expanded and the already existing cultural transfer between the cultures made visible and tangible for the visitors. 

On the one hand, this cooperation facilitates a long-term, academic examination of "Writing and Image", in which exhibitions are developed and symposia are organised, as well as publications are produced. Through this cooperation, the Pinakotheken can access important work complexes by Etel Adnan, Karl Otto Götz, Hans Hartung, Susan Hefuna, Jenny Holzer, On Kawara, Brice Marden, Shiryu Morita, Shirin Neshat, Kazuo Shiraga, Mounira al Solh, Qiu Zhijie, Mark Tobey, Lawrence Weiner, Inoue Yu-ichi, Charles Hossein Zenderoudi and others, incorporate them into their presentations and contextualise them with their own collection.

On the other hand, the Written Art Collection will provide substantial acquisition funds for the expansion of the Sammlung Moderne Kunst in the Pinakothek der Moderne, as well as funding for a curatorial position dedicated to the topic and its mutual contextualisation.
