Martha Reproving Her Sister Mary
The traditional title of this painting (Luke 10, 38-42) may be misleading. It could also be a moralizing depiction, contrasting, for example, the opposites vanity and modesty. A virtuous maiden, her head wrapped in a headscarf, gestures resolutely, trying to convince a vain young woman who is gazing in a mirror, to change her ways.
