The branch gallery of the Bayerische Staatsgemäldesammlungen in the royal Residence Palace in Neuburg a.d. Donau contains 120 works devoted exclusively to Flemish Baroque painting. On commission from Duke Wolfgang Wilhelm of the Palatinate-Neuburg, Peter Paul Rubens completed three altar paintings for the court chapel in Neuburg: "The Great Last Judgement" (Alte Pinakothek, Munich) as well as two works for the side altars, "Adoration of the Shepherds" and "The Descending of the Holy Spirit." These paintings, which were brought to Neuburg in 1620 and about which information exists through extensive correspondence between Rubens and Wolfgang Wilhem concerning their execution and remuneration, were brought to Düsseldorf in 1692. They then found their way to Munich with the entire collection of works from the Düsseldorf Gallery in 1805.Virtually hidden in a repository after the Second World War, the works will now form the heart of the Staatsgalerie collection "Flemish Baroque painting" in Neuburg. In addition to these there are six further paintings from Rubens and his studio. Two other outstanding Antwerp painters of the time, Anthony van Dyck and Jacob Jordaens, who developed their own unmistakable style in addition to that of Rubens, are represented with history paintings and portraits. In Antwerp, all fields of painting were cultivated during the 17 th century: history, portrait, landscape, still life, hunting scenes and genre works. Each is shown through important examples from the best representatives of their respective field, including Hendrik van Balen, Jan Brueghel the Elder, Jan Cossiers, Frans Francken the Younger, Frans Snyders, David Teniers, Paul de Vos and Jan Wildens. |
