Staatsgalerie Moderne Kunst in the Glaspalast in Augsburg
A branch of the Pinakothek der Moderne
Exhibition duration: from 06.03.2010
Giro d’Italia
From 6 March, 2010, highlights of Italian art from the second half of the 20th century in the collection of the Pinakothek der Moderne can be seen in the Staatsgalerie Moderne Kunst at the Glaspalast in Augsburg in an exhibition entitled ‘Giro d’Italia’. Covering an exhibition area of 1500m2 in an industrial building flooded by natural light, visitors are invited to take a ‘tour artistique’ through the regions from which contemporary art has emerged. Works by artists such as Lucio Fontana and Emilio Vedova, who worked in the north of Italy, are being shown right next to sculptures by the Tuscan Marino Marini and works by Alberto Burri created in Rome, or vis-à-vis pictures by Mimmo Paladino from the south of the country.
The very different approaches adopted cannot be assigned to any one particular landscape or attributed to any one general movement. What is more apparent is the energy demonstrated by each individual artist after the collapse of the fascist dictatorship to find a lasting dialogue between reality and pure abstraction and, as such, to contribute to redefining the system of coordinates in the world of art.
‘Giro d’Italia’ is the first in a series of events focussing on the long and multifaceted relationship between Italy and Bavaria. In the Benedictine Monastery in St. Mang in Füssen, highlights of the transalpine exchange during the Holy Roman Empire will be shown between May and October 2010. An exhibition in the Maximilian Museum in Augsburg will underline the city’s role as an interface between north and south during the Renaissance. And the recently opened Textile Museum will be contrasting the reality faced by Italian migrant workers and the longing for ‘la dolce vita’ nurtured by many Germans.
