THE FAT BOOTY OF MADNESS Jewellery at the Academy of Fine Arts Munich: The Künzli Class
01.03.2008 - 18.05.2008
Exhibition | PINAKOTHEK DER MODERNE | DESIGN

100.000 years of jewellery - 200 years of the Academy of Fine Arts Munich - 73 years of the art of the goldsmith at the Academy - 17 years of the Künzli Department - 77 graduates and students.
Emotional, provocative, conceptual, imaginative, daring, profound, crazy, rebellious, garish, stark, highly personal, refined, playful... big fat crazy booty? Multi-facetted, free from conventions and undogmatic is how the art of the goldsmith is understood at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich. The »Department of jewellery and hollow-ware« at the Academy of Fine Arts and its international network have contributed decisively to Munich's reputation as one of the leading international centres of jewellery d'auteur. Since 1991, it has been headed by the Swiss goldsmith Professor Otto Künzli (born 1948 in Zurich).
»We are »proud« to be applied artists in the sense that we see our strength in the specific link between objects and humans, a feature which is quite unique to jewellery.« This is how Otto Künzli formulates one of his central ideas.
The exhibition of the Neue Sammlung has deliberately chosen to take a contemporary focus in launching the celebrations to mark the Academy's 200th anniversary of the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich.
On display are the works of former students from Künzli's department as well those currently studying under him - almost 80 artists in all. With some 400 exhibits from the 1990s to the present day the range of artistic approaches is as large as the number of goldsmiths themselves. The staging of the exhibition has been organised by the students and continues in the tradition of unusual and imaginative shows held annually by the Academy - shows which have long enjoyed »cult status«.
Publication with more than 1.000 illustrations.
In collaboration with the Academy of Fine Arts Munich and supported by the Danner Stiftung
