William Forsythe
26.04.2006 - 04.06.2006
Exhibition | PINAKOTHEK DER MODERNE | KUNST

William Forsythe (*1949 in New York) is the world's leading choreographer of the present day. His name stands undisputedly for new discoveries in the field of performing arts, for the future of dance, for the breaking down of traditional barriers and for crossover with the fine arts. For this reason, the planned project of the Pinakothek der Moderne represents a completely new departure in exhibition format. It will feature a live, stage-like and performative art exhibition to run in different rooms of the museum.
As artistic director of the Frankfurt Ballet, Forsythe developed over a number of years a highly complex and visionary language of dance. Since the 1990's, he has been exciting audiences with multimedia performances. In some cases, the spectators could follow certain scenes only on screen while the dancers acted as stage props. Forsythe has choreographed pieces for dance companies all over the world. His works have formed part of the repertoire of leading ensembles, including the New York City Ballet, San Francisco Ballet, National Ballet of Canada, Royal Ballet, Covent Garden, and the Paris Opéra Ballet.
The planned projects at the Pinakothek der Moderne present an historical overview of the works of the choreographer and the most important stages of his development. It begins in the 1970's when, parallel to Forsythe, Bruce Nauman and other internationally acclaimed concept artists were researching body and space.
In cooperation with the Bayerische Staatsoper (Bavarian State Ballet).
