Ort und Erinnerung - Sites of National Socialist Past in Munich
22.02.2006 - 28.05.2006
Exhibition | PINAKOTHEK DER MODERNE | ARCHITEKTUR

No other German city has been so closely associated with National Socialism as Munich. It was here - with the support of a number of private individuals, organisations and institutions - that corporal Adolf Hitler rose from the ranks of army reject and informant to the position of »Führer« of Germany's largest party. It was here that the NSDAP, SA and SS were founded. And it was in the murky political subculture of Munich that decisive elements of Nazi doctrine were allowed to take shape. The reference to Munich in 1935 as the »leading city of the Nazi Movement« bears testimony to the political significance of the Bavarian capital - which is why important party headquarters and the administration of the members and finances of the party were established here.

In this exhibition, organised jointly by the Architekturmuseum der TU München (Architecture Museum of the TU Munich) and the City Archives of Munich, the most important sites associated with National Socialism are made visible and explained within the context of the city's structure. The aim is to expose the topography of terror and the network of crimes that cast their shadow over Munich. The exhibition and catalogue provide a further stimulus to the long-running discussion surrounding the proposal to build a NS-Documentation Centre in Munich.
