Camille Corot (1796 - 1875)
Born on July 17, 1796 in Paris and died there as well on February 22, 1875. Corot began his training by the Parisian landscape painters Achille Etna Michallon and Jean Victor Bertin in 1822. His studies further lead him to Fontainbleau and to the Normandy coast. During a three-year stay in Italy beginning 1825 he completed landscape studies, which ultimately lead him to discover his own painting style. Corot made his debut at the Paris Salon of 1827. He made numerous trips through the French countryside, as well as to Switzerland, Italy, Holland and, eventually in 1862 to London. His intensive dealings with his artist friends of the Barbizon School, as well as with the work of Claude Lorrain and Nicholas Poussin, helped lead Corot to his distinctive landscape style. |
