Der Anatom

Gabriel Cornelius von Max (1840 - 1915)

Born on August 23, 1840 in Prague and died on November 24, 1915 in Munich. After a course of studies at the Prague Academy and thereafter, starting 1858, at the Academy in Vienna, Max travelled to Munich in 1863 where he worked under the guidance of Carl Theodor von Piloty until the completion of his studies in 1867. In the same year he went to Paris where he was inspired by Gustave Courbet and Éduard Manet. He accepted a position as professor at the Munich Academy from 1879 until1883. The output of this self-willed artist, who was also interested in parapsychological phenomena, spirituality and hypnotism, as well as Darwin¿s scientific theories, embraces various symbolist tendencies.
