Vincent van Gogh (1853 - 1890)
Born on March 30, 1853 in Groot-Zundert (North Brabant) and died on July 29, 1890 in Auvers-sur-Oise. - Between 1869 and 1876 van Gogh worked in the art dealership Goupil. Being the son of a pastor, van Gogh had planned to study theology in Amsterdam, decided however after a short spell as curate and missionary, to turn his attention to painting. In 1880 he began his art studies with Anton Mauve and moved to The Hague; from 1883 to 1885 further on to Nuenen. After a stay in Antwerp, he relocated again to Paris 1886/87. Although van Gogh was steeped in the French-Dutch realist tradition, in Paris he henceforth turned his attention to Impression, although he took over little more than the bright coloration, which would become so typical for his works. In February 1888 van Gogh settled in Arles where he worked for a while with Gaugin, which quickly led to conflict. Starting May 1889 van Gogh was admitted to hospitals in Arles and St. Rémy due to a nervous condition; from 1890 he entered the care of Dr. Gachet in Auvers-sur-Oise where the artist died by his own hand. As a forerunner of expressionist tendencies, van Gogh's color-heightened paintings, commonly abounding with glittering brush strokes, show the use of line to be the determining element in contrast to Impressionism. |
