Introduction

Scientific investigation and analysis is one of the central activities carried out by museums. This also holds true for the Bayerische Staatsgemäldesammlungen and the affiliated Doerner-Institut, which are involved in, among other things, numerous research and conservation projects relating to the collections. The spectrum of tasks ranges from provenance research and scientific analyses of paintings through to research topics focusing various aspects of the collections.
