Perugino – Raphael’s Master
13.10.2011 – 15.01.2012, Alte Pinakothek
Pietro Perugino was one of the most successful artists of the Italian Renaissance around 1500. Prominent patrons courted his attention even some distance from Florence and Perugia, the centres in which he worked. It was not just the classical harmony and technical skill of his paintings that his contemporaries admired, but their contemplative, lyrical mood in particular.
In 1829, King Ludwig I of Bavaria managed to acquire one of the master’s principal works, The Vision of Saint Bernard, for the Alte Pinakothek. This altarpiece is an invitation to rid Perugino of the shadow cast by his pupil Raphael. The Munich exhibition is the first major show outside Italy to be devoted entirely to Perugino. It comprises 40 exquisite paintings on loan from international collections (including the Uffizi Gallery, the Louvre and the Hermitage), focussing in particular on the heyday of the artist’s career. Apart from the impressive religious works, unique examples of Perugino’s skill as a portraitist and of his mythological creations vividly illustrate the humanist ideals of the times.
The exhibition is being funded by the Ernst von Siemens Kunststiftung.

Lecture
‘Vasari und Perugino. Geschichte einer Verleumdung’ (Vasari and Perugino. A Tale of Libel) – lecture to accompany the exhibition
Rudolf Hiller von Gaertringen, Curator at the Kunstsammlungen der Universität Leipzig, wrote the commentary for a new translation of Giorgio Vasari’s ‘Vita des ,Pietro Perugino’ (1568) that has recently been published. His interpretation of the text – rich in both facts and anecdotes – is that of a carefully stage-managed discreditation of the artist. Vasari’s sometimes friendly criticism of Perugino’s art is accompanied by malicious accusations: the painter was allegedly greedy, pigheaded and a heretic. Jointly presented by the Alte Pinakothek and Wagenbach Verlag, Berlin.

Reading
‘Every other morning – except on Saturdays when there was no admission charge – the music philosopher Reger would take his place on the bench opposite Tintoretto’s ‘Old Man with a White Beard’ in the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna, and become engrossed in the painting. One day, this routine was to be interrupted. Reger asks his friend Atzbacher to meet him in the museum – on a Saturday of all days. ’ (Text on cover, published by Suhrkamp).

Who do we come face to face with every day? Who do we find ourselves with in our dreams or in our imagination? Lots of well-known and unknown people and animals to be sure – but also creatures that don’t exist at all. We shall sketch our own scene on paper in the studio and then act it out together. We’ll take a look at the pictures painted by Perugino in the museum which depict human figures from the Renaissance coming face to face with saints – or with the infant Jesus, Mary and angels. What does Perugino include in such scenes and how does he paint these?

The Renaissance represented the dawn of a new era in European culture. People sought to see reality in a different light – their relationship to the world, to themselves and to God changed fundamentally, and this left its mark in the works of art of the period. The Umbrian painter Perugino devised ways to express this new view of the world. His figures capture people confronting the world, nature and heavenly beings in a unique manner. Practical work in the Palais Pinakothek will make Perugino’s pictorial inventions easier to understand, such as his handling of space and his figures’ silent but articulate gestures. Selected works by the master will then be analysed following his ‘visual thoughts’ in the Alte Pinakothek.

His contemporaries heralded Pietro Perugino (c. 1450–1523) as the best painter of his generation. Popes, cardinals, dukes and wealthy merchants were among his clients. He managed his workshop with astute business acumen, dealing with a surprising number of major commissions for the Church and municipalities in Umbria and Tuscany.
