Iso Camartin studied philosophy and romance studies in Munich, Bologna and Regensburg. He did a doctorate on Kant and Fichte in 1971. From 1974 until 1977 he worked as a Research Fellow at the »Center for European Studies« at Harvard University. Besides his journalistic work, he held a chair at several universities in Switzerland. He won the following prizes: 1985 Prix européen de l'essai Charles Veillon, 1988 Conrad-Ferdinand-Meyer-Preis, 1997 Prix Lipp littéraire, 1998 Johann-Heinrich-Merck-Preis.
From 1985 until 1997 Iso Camartin was a full professor for Rhaeto-Romanic literature and culture at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich and the University of Zurich. He was in charge of the cultural department of Swiss Television from 2000 until 2003. Since then he has been working as a free journalist and author.
