Pietro Perugino was one of the leading artists of the Italian Renaissance around 1500. Famous patrons, even far away from Florence and Perugia where he worked, vied for his services as a panel and fresco painter. One of this master's major works is in the Alte Pinakothek: Perugino's depiction of the appearance of the Virgin to St. Bernhard combines the aesthetic and spiritual qualities of his humanistically influenced art. The altarpiece, acquired by Ludwig I in the early 19th century, invites us to draw Perugino out from the shadow cast by his pupil, Raphael. This is the first time an exhibition outside Italy - that will include exceptional works on loan from international museums - is being devoted to the master. A selection of paintings and drawings highlight Perugino¿s mature work from the 1490s in particular, at the beginning of which the Munich work was created, as well as the roots and influence of his art. In addition to the religious works, sensitive portraits and mythological scenes are exemplary for the contemplative harmony and lyrical mood of his painting.
