EXHIBITION

DONALD JUDD - A GOOD CHAIR IS A GOOD CHAIR

15.07.2011 - 09.10.2011
Pinakothek der Moderne

Die neue Sammlung - The International Design Museum Munich

A joint exhibition by the Neue Sammlung and the Sammlung Moderne Kunst.
'If a chair or a building is not functional, it is ridiculous. ' (Donald Judd)
The American Donald Judd (1928-1994) is widely considered one of the most important artists of the 20th century worldwide. In the 1960s he came to fame as one of the champions of Minimal Art, and expanded his creative reach to include the fields of architecture and design. Few have known to date, however, that Donald Judd also worked intensively on furniture design. This exhibition presents a focussed selection of furniture designed by Judd. It also includes prototypes and early items that Judd himself built for his own use that, up until now, have rarely been on show outside Judd's home towns of New York and Marfa, Texas.
The Pinakothek der Moderne's unique concept and the focal points of its individual museums enable visitors to appreciate Donald Judd's work in a variety of different contexts. Die Neue Sammlung's permanent exhibition allows Judd's furniture to be seen together with designs that he particularly treasured, e.g. furniture by Ray and Charles Eames, or the Braun products designed by Dieter Rams.
Installations by Judd as well as his contemporaries Dan Flavin and Fred Sandback can be seen in the Sammlung Moderne Kunst with its emphasis on American art. Simultaneously, American Minimal Art is being highlighted by the Staatliche Graphische Sammlung München in its exhibition 'The Space of the Line'.
An exhibition of Die Neue Sammlung - The International Design Museum Munich - in cooperation with the Sammlung Moderne Kunst/Bayerische Staatsgemäldesammlungen and the IKON Gallery, Birmingham.
