Life and Work

Turner was one of the most innovative landscape painters of his time. Although his choice of motif frequently owed much to Claude Lorraine and the classical tradition, his approach to nature was much bolder. As this painting indicates, he had a particularly strong feeling for sublime subjects in extreme atmospheric conditions, which culminated in his late work in almost abstract colour compositions.
