Gallery 12

Johann Peter Hasenclever studied at the Düsseldorf Academy of Art under Wilhelm von Schadow and Theodor Hildebrandt. He is one of the founders of Düsseldorf genre painting. He was known for his humoristic and sometimes socially critical pictures, which were modelled on 17th century Dutch and 18th century English painting and concerned with contemporary themes. Among his most famous works are the "Wine Tasting" and "Reading Cabinet" (both in Berlin, Alte Nationalgalerie) and also "Workers and City Parliament in 1848" (Düsseldorf, Museum Kunst Palast), which demonstrated his sympathies for the uprising by reflecting the charged atmosphere of that year of revolution in Germany. Hasenclever's genre painting also enjoyed success in other parts of Europe and America. The great demand for his works led him to repeat certain motifs several times over. In 1848, Hasenclever became co-founder of the art society "Malkasten", which is one of the oldest of its kind in Germany.
