Alte Pinakothek

Cabinet 7

Jan Siberechts, son of a sculptor of the same name, was born in Antwerpen in 1627. After his apprenticeship to the portrait painter Adriaen de Bie in Mechelen, he was accepted into the Guild of St. Luke 1648/49. The artist travelled to England 1672/73 upon the invitation of the Duke of Buckingham. His early work shows Italianizing influences; however, characteristic for the artist are his pastoral landscapes which reflect country life in Flanders, often populated with shepherds and farmers in the foreground. In England he primarily painted the manors of his aristocratic commissioners. Siberechts died in London in 1703.
