Born on April 30, 1835 in Stronach (Tyrol) and died on January 2, 1921 in Munich. - Defregger started his art career somewhat later in life, beginning his training as painter first in 1861. In Munich he was taken on as a student by Carl von Piloty. Starting 1878 he was professor at the Academy in Munich. Defregger transformed Piloty's realistic style of history painting into one which was more genre-like. Thematically he showed a preference for Tyrolese history, most especially scenes of farm and country life as well as from the fight for independence in Tyrol in 1809. In the 1880's his painting slipped into a more folksy-narrative style.
