This portrait, hardly bigger than the size of a hand, shows the artist at the age of 23. The half-profile has a spontaneous feeling: As if passing by, Rembrandt has captured his likeness, the dark eyes seem almost shy and questioning and his mouth open as if about to speak. No artist before or after Rembrandt has painted as many self-portraits.
