Fra Filippo Lippi (1406 - 1469)

The Annunciation
Ca. 1450

Wood, 203 x 186 cm
Acquired for the electoral collection at the beginning of the 19th century from the monastery of the Suore Murate, Florence
Inv.-Nr. 1072

The artist has staged the scene in a Renaissance architectural setting that, through the emphasis of the double walling that surrounds the garden, appears to be a reference to the order ("Murate") as well as to the "hortus conclusus" (the enclosed Garden) from the Song of Songs: A symbol of Mary's virginity, as is the lily that is held by the angel.
