| The artist has staged the scene in a Renaissance architectural setting that, through the emphasis of the double walling that surrounds the garden, appears to be a reference to the order ("Murate") as well as to the "hortus conclusus" (the enclosed Garden) from the Song of Songs: A symbol of Mary's virginity, as is the lily that is held by the angel. |
