Sandro Botticelli (1445 - 1510)

Florentine painter. Born c.1445 in Florence. Probably trained initially as a goldsmith under his brother Antonio. Subsequently a pupil of Fra Filippo Lippi, whose late style had a decisive influence on him. Close links also existed to Filippino Lippi and artists of his circle, who, as a group, - in contrast to the interest in plastic realism of other artists of the Florentine Quattrocento, - brought about a kind of revival of Gothic forms of expression, characterized by a soft line style of draughtsmanship and slender figures. Botticelli was active mainly in Florence; he participated 1481/82 in the painting of the Sistine Chapel in the Vatican. He died 1510 in Florence.
