| Depicted are here St. Anthony the Hermit (with bell), Pope Cornelius (with a horn, Latin cornu, relating to his name) and Mary Magdalene (ointment pot). The right hand wing panel shows Catherine of Alexandria (sword and wheel), St. Hubert (stag) and Quirin of Neuss (banner with nine spheres relating to the Latin town name Neuss: Novesium). In the foreground of each panel an unidentified donor is kneeling, in the panel corners are their coats of arms. The panels were originally the wings belonging to Lochner's Last Judgement altarpiece (Cologne, Wallraf-Richartz-Museum).The martyrdom of the apostles was depicted on the inside (today: Frankfurt a.M., Städel). |
