After the birth of Isaac, Abraham sent the Egyptian handmaid Hagar and their mutual son Ishmael out of his house, upon the request of his wife Sarah (1 Moses 21, 9-21). The two were only given bread and water to exist on. This painting was conceived as a companion piece to the artis'ts "Hagar and Ishmael in the Desert."
