Hagar and Ishmael in the Desert
1668

Canvas, 106,4 x 140 cm
From the possession of the director of the Zweibrücken Gallery Johann Christian von Mannlich

This painting is the companion piece to Lorrain's "The Expulsion of Hagar". The angel is shown revealing the well that was to save Hagar and Ishmael from dying of thirst in the desert. The feeling in both works is tranquil, as all that is occurring is with God's consent. Not only Isaac, but also Ishmael are to be the founders of a great nation of people.
