The Art of the Frame Exploring the Holdings of the Alte Pinakothek
28.01.2010 - 18.04.2010
Exhibition | ALTE PINAKOTHEK MüNCHEN
The Bavarian State Painting Collections do not just own a huge number of paintings, but a vast collection of frames, too. A selection of frames dating from between 1600 and 1850 will be looked at in detail in the exhibition and explained to the public. Designs made by such important artists as François Cuvilliés, Paul Egell and Augustin Egell who, it is known, once worked for the Electors of Bavaria and the Palatinate, will be shown in the exhibition together with actual frames that have survived to this day.
The influence of the French on Effner and Cuvilliés is documented by graphic works and explained using different examples.
The first group of frames on show comprises so-called 'gallery frames', of which many are still in existence. The designs and frames made for the Court Garden Gallery by Carl Albrecht von Lespillez and for the Alte Pinakothek by Leo von Klenze highlight developments in Munich in the late 18th and early 19th centuries.
The second group includes exceptional frames which are of special importance either stylistically or historically. Outstanding examples found in the exhibition rooms on the upper floor of the Alte Pinakothek as well as those in the Flemish Department on the ground floor in the same building will be displayed with explanatory texts for the visitor. |
